Brake Mounts

Brakes are a crucial component of your mountain bike. Disc brakes use a circular metal disc mounted on the hub of the wheel which rotate through a calliper containing the brake pads. When the brake lever is squeezed the pads apply pressure to the rotor to slow the bike down. It is essential that your brakes have the correct mounting system for the frame and fork. The measurement of brake mounts is based on the distance between the centre of the two bolt mounting holes.

International Standard (IS) brake mounts have bolt holes positioned perpendicular to the frame and an adaptor is generally needed to fit the calliper. Post Mounts have holes parallel to the frame and can be bolted on directly. Rear brakes are usually equipped with IS mounts but more manufacturers are finding the Post Mount system more convenient for the forks.
